Kingston University

Wayfinding for a new flagship building

The Town House is the latest addition to Kingston University’s Kingston campus. The new landmark building has transformed the learning experience and brought together the University and the local community. Facilities include a learning resources centre, a covered courtyard, cafés and a welcoming and attractive new landscaping scheme across the front of the campus. With this extensive new offer we helped Kingston University create a comprehensive internal and external signage system, reflective of their brand and in keeping with the architectural vision set out by Grafton Architects.

Understanding the landscape

The first step involved immersing ourselves in the distinctive features of architecture. By understanding the layout and purpose of the space, we laid the foundation for a wayfinding system that not only guided but also enhanced the overall user experience. The large concrete framework of the building meant the external signage needed to have presence, while the internal package needed to be seen but compliment its surroundings.

User-Centric Design

Through extensive user feedback sessions and journey mapping, we identified key touchpoints and decision-making moments in various user pathways throughout the building. This user-centric approach ensured that the wayfinding system catered to the diverse needs of students, staff, and visitors, enhancing accessibility and usability.
